Teachers Speeches and Inservices

One of our goals for the year is to make sure that all our operations are being run orderly and in such a manner as to leave everyone sane (and capable of great thinking). Long-term, I have promised our staff and school council that we will better articulate our curriculum this year. Additionally, we want its evaluation, fine tuning and re-adoption process to be as dynamic as possible. Some of our staff development and teacher presentation highlights:

  • Health Update: Check out the Center for Human Functioning; info. on food allergies/role of proper nutrition for being ready to learn www.brightspot.org (we have some brochures in the office).
Junior High CYO

We have started a new Junior High CYO at Blessed Sacrament this year.

Our purpose in starting this group is to have a youth organization for all 7th and 8th graders of the parish that offers fun and unique social and service activities to facilitate their participation in the life and mission of the Church.

Contact one of our Junior CYO Coordinators with questions. Austin Powers at 806-1867 or Jourdan King at 371-2052.

Listed below is the calendar of events for the first semester and we hope you will encourage your child to participate.  All events held at Blessed Sacrament are from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

November 16 – Popcorn Talk (Youth Discussion) – St. Joseph Room
December 7 – Mitten Drive and White Elephant Gift Exchange – St. Joseph Room

Last year's accomplishments

Thank you everybody for a great year!  Click here to read the entire list >

Amongst our accomplishments:

With the help of our teachers, Bishop Conley, Father Juan, Father Edmond and Mary Fisher we had a wonderful year of catechetical and liturgical emphasis highlighted by:

  • Liturgical celebrations of the many great feast days (on the actual feast day).
  • Children’s adoration once monthly.
  • A new First Friday Benediction format (Cale on guitar and the lights out) to focus more reverently on the Eucharist.
  • Pro-life efforts, numerous missions and fund raisers for the poor
  • A 6th grade focus on kindness highlighted our community efforts to Walk the Talk an All-Saints day program (and saints costume dress-up) on All-Hallows Eve

Classical Curriculum Book List

We do have a book list in the process of formation. Click here to download the list.

We are recommending that students take at least two of the books that they read independently off this list. As explained on the list, for k-2 students classical reading should be a combination of reading the decodable readers the student is able to read and being read to the fairy tales and fables that would be too difficult for the student to read themselves. If this is done regularly, you would be surprised at how fast the students would want to start reading independently. It is still imperative, however, that above grade level language is orally read to each student (if you don’t have the time, you can even buy tapes).  One book on the list, “Tanglewood Tales for Children” by Nathaniel Hawthorne has the most child intriguing story of Greek gods and battle (Theseus—the first story). This book, and many others, are available on your IPOD (for free from the Gutenberg Project—google it). For older students 3-8, there is a strategy on the list for reading books to educate the mind (as opposed to accumulating AR points). One good strategy is to let the student read their own choices one half the time and then to guide them toward books that will show them that non-trendy books could be fun, also. TV’s and video games must be limited (and family reading time regularly enjoyed) for any successful reading strategy to take hold.

Accelerated Math Software

With all the emphasis on Classical Reading, we cannot do disservice to the other subjects.

For anyone who has read my tips on academic excellence articles on the website, you will see that academic excellence is not going to come from completing the curriculum alone. In this day of distracted minds, the curriculum moves so slowly that parents would be well-advised to take progress into their own hands, especially as the Saxon Math curriculum is intended to move slowly.  Students can still get on their computers at home for extra practice, as announced in the beginning of the summer.

The logon is:  https://Hosted123.renlearn/com/200438/Homeconnect/Login.aspx

The login is the same for Accelerated Reader. You can actually check points and AR progress from home in this same address.
Blessed Sacrament School Graduates

“Calling All Adventurer Graduates”

Do you know of a somewhat recent (within the last 20 years) Blessed Sacrament graduate who is working or volunteering in an unusual locale somewhere around the world?

If so, call Mr. Grogan at 684-3752.

He is currently working on an alumni bulletin board in the hallway by the school office.

Scrips Online

Students returned to Blessed Sacrament School ready to tackle its many academic challenges and joys. Providing the excellent teachers, updated technologies, and educational opportunities for the students is an ever-increasing financial burden. The parish is responsible for the school and maintaining the high standards that make Blessed Sacrament School a standout institution.

Every parishioner can help offset some of these costs for education by taking advantage of the Scrips/Dillons card program. There is really no cost to supporting this program for you. Each time the card is used, a portion of the purchase price is given to our school in the form of a rebate. The amount of the rebate varies from business to business. Download Current Scrips On Hand

You can purchase the gift/Dillons cards after the 9:00 Sunday Mass in Bishops Hall or go to the school office during school hours.

Parishioners have a long history of rallying to meet parish needs and your use of this program can bring in thousands of dollars for use in Blessed Sacrament School. Please take advantage of this opportunity for found money for the school. To read more about our Scrip program, click here. To see our complete list, please click here.

Altar Server Schedule

Altar Server schedules will now be available on your child’s Power School site (except when the site is closed before grading periods).  To Login to PowerSchool to download the Altar Server Schedule, click here.

Schedules will no longer be sent home with the students, beginning soon. You may also check the church bulletin.

Please remember that being an altar server is an important commitment, a service to Our Lord, and is to be taken seriously. If you are scheduled, please show up 15 minutes prior to mass beginning.

If you cannot serve, you must secure a substitute to cover for you.
